What makes one place a “better” place to work than another? IRI believes the key ingredients include: fair compensation, committed leadership, a work environment that allows people to be comfortable at work while having the opportunity to enjoy their time away from work, effective communication, and an opportunity to be secure in post work years.

The competition is designed to identify such places in Southeast Michigan and starts with the notion that these factors can be both measured and evaluated. What sets “The Best Places to Work” competition apart from other programs is that the criteria for selection relies on hard, verifiable data that reviews the conditions meaningful to employees rather than opinions.

A brief look at some of the demographics of those participating is illustrated below:

“The Best Places to Work in Southeast Michigan” competition is extremely rigorous. Some very good companies with outstanding programs failed to make the initial cut. Over the years, IRI has made the selection of those who are recognized in this contest as objective as possible. The evaluation process measures programs that make an organization attractive to a broad range of potential employees. As with any rigorous competition, some excellent contenders are left behind. To quote a past contestant:

“The IRI evaluation and selection process is thorough and comprehensive. IRI knows what it takes to be a great place to work. Just filling out their entry form will give any company a good idea of what they need to do to improve their working conditions.”

It has always been assumed that while organizations enter this type of competition in hopes of receiving recognition, an equally important reason is to identify opportunities for improvement. Research confirms that great workplaces benefit from many competitive advantages and an improved bottom line.

By embracing organizational best practices – and by backing up these claims with hard facts – the companies that entered the contest are saying that their business is indeed one of the best places to work in the metro area. Their involvement in the program places them in an elite group and has truly earned them recognition as an employer of choice. IRI and our co-sponsor, Crain’s Detroit Business, applaud all those who entered the program.
